4 mm is a helical-scan technology, where tape the tape moves very slowly but the head rotates rapidly (like a VCR). The latest 4mm drives store 160 GBytes of data on a tape with 320GB drives scheduled to appear shortly. 4mm technology offers exceptionally low cost per megabyte for low to medium usage applications, with data transfer rates up to 2.5MB/sec.

8 mm is another helical-scan technology that offers an excellent price/performance ratio. Recent innovations from Sony have produced exceptionally reliable drives that offer capacities up to 800GB and transfer rates of over 50MB/sec.

LTO (Linear Tape Open) has become the de-facto standard for high capacity, high performance backup. Manufactured by multiple companies but conforming to agreed standards, LTO tape drives offer outstanding performance with capacities up to 1.6Tbytes per tape and speeds of up to 240MB/sec. The 5th generation of LTO drive is scheduled to be avaqilable by 2010 and will double the existing speed and capacity.
