SOLUTIONS FOR THE
Banking Industry
For financial institutions, today's challenge is to give
customers "on demand" access to their financial resources, from anywhere and at
any time. Regulatory changes and technology make it possible but, as with any new business
direction, it also brings intense new competition and fresh questions. In particular, the
question of business continuity...the need to plan for loss of the use of valuable
computer assets is vital.
Disasters have often been seen in very restricted views but
now, the need to be able to cope with a range of scenarios is understood. Many smaller
companies have made reciprocal agreements with other similar companies in the same market
segments who have similar equipment and so lowered the substantial costs involved in
disaster recovery planning.
Disasters can come in various forms, floods, fire, storm,
terrorism, loss of access, loss of power, theft...
Examples of Avax's solutions are set out below.

Products & Solutions

| Paranoia2 In-line tape encryption unit
The Paranoia2 data encryption unit builds on the technology of the original Paranoia unit to provide even more secure encryption, combined with the much higher throughput that is required by today's higher speed tape drives.

Dual drive tape subsystems
Where one tape drive is sited remotely on the disaster recovery site via fibre optic links
and a mirror back-up method is used. This ensures that the latest back-up is available on
the disaster recovery site allowing for the disaster recovery site to be up and running
with valid data very quickly.
Tape Libraries
Avax offers a complete range of 8mm
and DLT tape libraries. Once you set up the tape library and
install the tape-inventory software, the network administrator sets a backup schedule and
simply changes the magazine once per week or month.
TA40 Tape Array
Dual drives providing data striping, mirror and off-line copy modes. Capacity to 130
GBytes. SUSTAINED data transfer rates to 20MB/sec.
Mirror mode produces two identical backup tapes simultaneously, with no additional
system overhead. Using this method increases backup security by a factor of 1000! For
additional security, the second drive can be remotely located via a fibre link
Tape Subsystems
Avax's tape subsystems cover a wide range of capacities - 2 GByte to 960 GByte, a range of
transfer rates - 256 KBytes/sec to more than 20 MBytes/sec, and a very wide range of platforms.
- TE40 ultra-SCSI tape
interface/emulator
Connect almost any 4mm, 8mm or DLT tape drive (including
Sony AIT) to
practically any system.
Complete emulation of standard manufacturer
supplied drives for "plug and play"
operation.
-
Data Interchange Solutions
From 1/2" 1600/6250 BPI reel-to-reel drives to
3480/3490/3490E compatible drives and stackers, or any of the newer format SCSI tape drives
(4mm, 8mm, DLT), with
data interchange software to handle mainframe and unix formats on practically any platform or operating system - Avax is the single source for all your data interchange requirements.
SCSI Switches
Used to share devices or to switch all the peripherals
between a live and back-up system in a failback situation; making more use of existing
peripherals by allowing them to be shared across multiple platforms.
Extenders
A hardware device which allows a SCSI bus to operate
over a distance of up to 40 kilometres using fibre optic cables; a major step forwards for
high availability distributed processing, delivering the advantage of both speed and
distance for open SCSI working.
SCSI Converters
Enable departments to use existing equipment to do what
they want, where they want. Using single ended SCSI to differential SCSI
converters the bus length available is 35 metres and is less suseptible to noise so
is better for use in industrial or other specialist applications.
